Back-to-School Basics: Students, Parents, and Teachers

The phrase Back-to-School hits different for parents. Parents are full of excitement from the thrill of the children getting out of the house. Long summer months can bring stress, expensive and long grocery bills, and other things. Students are usually thrilled of getting back to school to reacquaint with friends and classmates. Teachers are usually slow to the thrill of getting back to school but most are ambitious to take on another year.

We can all remember that "first day of school" feeling. The mixed emotions of new classmates, new teachers, new clothes, new friends, and new activities. The first day of school is like leaving the first impression. You want the first experience to be a good one. The best way to ensure that students, teachers, and parents have a good first day of school is to be prepared.

There is no worse feeling than showing up somewhere and you are not prepared. Imagine going to give a presentation in front of a large crowd without your presentation. That can leave an embarrassing feeling. Being prepared is a great way to eliminate or reduce stress. On the first day of school, you want to walk into the classroom well groomed, well dressed, with your supplies in your backpack ready to learn. Not only does this give the student confidence and reduce stress, but it also provides a sense of comfort for the parent, and the teacher. Teachers get excited when they see that students are prepared and ready to go. There are many ways to prepare for back to school

Attitude is everything. The look on a student's face can give a pretty good insight into how excited the student is on the first day of school. If a student is sleeping on the bus or in class, they may not be excited to return to school. The students with big smiles on their faces are probably displaying their excitement to be back in school. Having a positive attitude promotes positive outcomes. A positive attitude can create a positive atmosphere, you want to ensure that you create a positive atmosphere for your students and peers. Being prepared and starting your day off right gives you an opportunity to have a great day.

Be Prepared. I can not stress the importance of being prepared.

Being prepared is a key tool for success. Back-to-school preparedness is important for the students, teachers, and parents. All play an important role in the success of the student. If all are prepared the students have a better opportunity to learn.

Cool. Being cool, calm, and collected is important. How can we be cool, calm, and collected on the first day of school? By being prepared, organized, and ready to go. If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, or uncomfortable, breathing exercises can help you become relaxed.

Did I talk about being prepared? What does being prepared really mean? Being prepared for the first day of school is more than having supplies in your backpack. You just spent two months of leisure, videogames, late nights, junk food, and a variety of activities that are not related to school. With that being said, it is time to get off your summer schedule and recreate a school schedule. This includes going to bed at a decent time and getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep. Eating a healthy breakfast is also a good way to ensure that you are prepared for the day. We are talking about back to school and we have mentioned the first day of school, but these are habits that you want to form and continue throughout the year.

When you prepare to go back to school be sure you get some extra items that will help you stay on task, stay engaged, remain focused, and will help you stay organized, such as a planner or organizer. Something so simple can be used for many different things. Start thinking about deadlines. Homework and other assignments are issued with due dates. You want to ensure that you are beating those deadlines. Procrastination is never a good idea with school assignments, it opens the door for failure. It is also time to get back to reading and studying. Getting back to school can be difficult, annoying, stressful, and overwhelming. It is beneficial to start making adjustments prior to the first day of school.

When you are preparing for school evaluate yourself and create challenges for yourself to improve your weaknesses and enhance your strengths. Try something new like an art class, or music class and try to discover a new you.

Open House and orientation at school seem to be redundant once you have reached a certain grade level. However, attending orientation or open house gives you an opportunity to meet your teachers, and some peers, get a feeling of the environment, as well as give an idea of where your class(es) are located. Believe it or not, this reduces a great deal of stress for most students, parents, and teachers.

Be positive in all you do in preparing for back to school. Believe in yourself that you will have a successful and positive school year. Give yourself praises when you accomplish goals and earn good grades and ensure that you understand that all students are not equal and do not learn the same. All students are unique in their own ways. Be the YOU in unique and know your own unique self-worth.

Back to School should be an exciting time for students, parents, and teachers. Ensuring that students are prepared with school supplies is important, ensuring that students are supplied with the tools needed for success such as sleep, good attitudes, and good sleeping habits is just as important.
